Working with the “what if” mind

There’s a poem by the Sufi mystic Hafiz that has been running about in my head over the last several weeks:

What do sad people have in common?
It seems they have all built a shrine
To the past and often go there
And do a strange wail and worship.
What is the beginning of happiness?
It is to stop being so religious like that.

A meditation teacher of mine said that the same can be true of people who suffer from anxiety – only we’re all doing our strange wail and worship to a shrine we’ve built to the future.

My shrine to the future is the “What if” mind. What if we crash the RV…what if we breakup half way through the trip…what if I can’t get a job ever again…what if Ryan dies…what if I die…what if, what if, what if.

I am still working out how to not be quite so religious about it.
